Family mediation gives people who are separated or divorcing a creative alternative to the family courts for making decisions. Mediation is a cooperative and constructive way to resolve differences and plan for the future. Minnesota District Court requires that alternatives to court be considered early in the dissolution process. Certified family mediation skills training with expert trainer and experienced practitioner Karen Irvin, PhD, LMFT provides the opportunity to become a qualified family facilitative neutral under the General Rules of Practice for the District Courts Rule 114. Training includes conflict management and problem solving theory and skills that are broadly applicable. Additional topics include: psychodynamics of divorce; effects of divorce on children; child-centered decision making; domestic violence; property and financial issues, and ethical considerations in mediation practice. Emphasis is on learning through practice.
